A Year in Hawaii

Kalani

Kalani continues to be a large part of my life. Most importantly, it is the social hub of my world, I can drop in at any time and know that there are friends to hang out with. Evening in the cafe often end up in some sort of snuggle pile as you can see below.

I've continuted to try to work a day a week, both to be part of the team, as well as to make some money on my tab to buy meals. When I show up for a day in landscaping, I never know what I'll be doing. This lucky day, our task was to slop bucket after bucket of mud out of a pond that was past due for cleaning. I calculated that we moved about 10,000 lbs of mud on this day alone.

The beautiful summer weather lent itself to a lot of horsing around in the pool. Here, Roy, Ocean, Veronica and myself were working on a syncronized water acrobatic performance.

The character of kalani changes seasonally with the different volunteers that come and go. This year it went through about a 9 month party stint. I chose to dip in every now and then and join the crazy kids. Here I am with Kupono, Shelly, and Marina who became the dream team champions of a new (to me) drinking game called Flip Cup. Man that was fun.

More Partying

Here I am with Chris who is a member of Kalani's permanent staff who is has become one of my best friends on the island, and Tracy, volunteer that was a truely radient person who blessed us with her presence for 3 months. We miss you Tracy!

In addition to all the fun and games, I have been doing a massage aprenticeship at Kalani to get my hawaii massage license. The state of hawaii requires 570 hours of instruction and practical experience to grant a license. I have been taking a class every week as well as two 3 hour clinics where volunteers and locals can sign up for a inexpensive massage by me under the supervision of my massage advisors. I feel very luck to be doing this apprenticeship at Kalani for many reasons. Our instructors and advisors are skilled healers each in their own way and make a lot of effort to pass on the subtleties that most people only learn from years and years of their own experience. Another wonderful aspect of doing this apprenticeship at Kalani is that I get to practice on all my friends in the clinics. It's not so hard to put all your love and caring into a massage when you're working on someone you genuniely care about. Here I am doing a thai floor massage on my good friend Betsy in one of our clinic sessions. As of today, I have 540 of my 570 hours so I'm almost ready to apply to take my test. The next one I'm eligible for is in March so I'll hopefully have my license then.
